Homer High

As much as I love Homer and the opportunities we get out of the education here (versus the Caribbean education which is given to a slight few) I really the High School! I can't wait to get out of it! I cannot stand how students come to school stoned. Even more, I can't stand how the teachers ignore it! It is disgusting!
Over half of the time students are getting high at school instead of coming to school high. I personally think that this is worse then getting high at home because school is supposed to be a safe haven for people. How can it?!?!?!?! It is a weed infested overgrown place. People in other countries would be appalled to see people throwing away their education like the students at HHS do. My brothers and sisters have to fight just to get into high school and here Homer kids are thinking that school is stupid! No, being successful is not stupid!

Love or Hate Homer

Homer is an amazing town. I love it here, but I also hate it. The people in this town are so conservative its sad. I know people who won't even try new foods because its out of their little world. When I was younger I was harassed continuously because of my race, size and mental maturity. I acted older than all the other students, I was way taller than them and I was black. Because they had never been exposed to this they didn't know how to act around me. I ened up being constantly harrased by these girl in middle school and the result was my homeschooling. My life was pretty sad when i was little. But now thati'm out of that, I LOVE the rest of Homer!

Hawaii!

I can't wait! In two weeks I will be warming my toes in the hot Hawaiian sand! I'm really excited! I have never been there before and I have only hear wonderful things! Each member of my family will be able to pick one thing that they want to do while we're there! Maya wants to take hula lessons, mom wants to snorkel, Dad wants to mountain bike and I want to go diving! How exciting! I can't wait!

Colorado, Maine, Montana, or Homer?

Colorado, Maine, Montana or Homer? Now, is the time when I have to start thinking about where I want to go to work for the summer. In Maine I would have Meadowview, which I LOVED! It was amazing and I already have my roots set there so it would be easy to get back in the groove. In Colorado I would just be going to go. It would probably be fun, and I could take Orion with me, but do I really want to go to some random place with no family nearby? Going to Montana I would mean that I would be able to get settled into my new home before college started out. I would have Orion and I would be able to make friends that I am going to keep throughout the next few years. Sound great... but do i really want to leave home before I have to?

Winter

One thing that the Caribbean has over Alaska is winter. Homer, Alaskan winters may be mild compared to Fairbanks, or Barrow winters, but they are nothing like Caribbean winters. For the last few trips back home we have always gone in the winter. Not only are we escaping the cold Alaskan winters, but we avoid being over heated in the killer Caribbean summers. This last trip we took down there was nice and relaxing as we adjusted to the heat. It was always about 82 degrees in the peak of the day, about 12:30-2. After adjusting to the hotter parts of the day the cooler parts were almost cold!
Even though the Caribbean is a constant get away, even in the winter, and winters in Alaska are pretty harsh, I still love this place!

The Caribbean is a beautiful landscape full of sandy beaches and palm trees. It is relaxing yet intense at the same time....
Whenever my family ventures to my homeland we try to keep away from tourist traps. We stick to the smaller or local side of town and only go shopping for trinkets 1 day in our whole vacation. The crowd jostles you and eats up all your energy and you barter with the vendors. By the end of the day, when you plop down on the couch and fall asleep listening to the lapping of the water, you know that it will make quite the interesting story to tell people when you get home. You may not have gotten everything you wanted but you came away with more than trinkets.
I remember calling my best friend after a long day of shopping in St. Lucia and telling her about this man who had dredlocks past his waist and would play the steel drums outside of the shopping center. He would try tosell you his CDs but listening to him play was absolutely breathtaking. It made us want to throw down our bags and dance our tired feet off!
Alaska on the other hand doesn't have very many good shopping stories... maybe some weird guy was yelled at the clerk because they didn't carry the shoes he wanted in the right size. But that's not really interesting. As much as i love Alaska and the people in it, i would have to say that St. Lucia wins out when it comes to memerable people interaction stories.

Alaska, a wide country of its own. When people ask me if Alaska is a not part of the U.S i just have to laugh at their ignorance. But I'm the one they should be laughing at. Alaska really is a different country, it has 6 different regions within it's boundaries.

When I was two months old something happened that changed my life forever. I was adopted...from one extreme, the Caribbean, to the other, Homer, Alaska. Everyone asks me why I would ever want to stay in Alaska when I could be in the sun 24/7. First off I don't have much of a choice, I'm underage. Second, who would want to leave Alaska? I personally Think Alaska is just as much of an escape from the world of reality that the West Indies are. The landscape is breathtaking and the animals are majestic.
Did I mention the landscape?
